TopSpin Installation Guide

1. Register for free account with XU email at www.bruker.com/about-us/register.html.
2. Login.
3. Browse to bit.ly/GetTopSpin.
4. Click Request Academia License.
5. Copy/paste or write down your license code, because it will disappear at the next screen.
6. Click Download for Windows (or whatever OS).
7. Click TopSpin 3.7 (you can download the version 4 software if you want. It works the same, but the
icons/colors/menus are all different).
  1. If Mac says it can’t open.
  2. Go to System Preferences.
  3. Go to Security & Privacy.
  4. Click the button to allow the Mac to open the installer program.
8. Accept the default prompts to install TopSpin, except as follows:
  1. When prompted, select to install Data Processing Only.
  2. When prompted, make sure the username is XAVIER\YourXUUserName. The XAVIER and the backslash direction are important.
  3. You may make the NMR Admin password whatever you want – does not have to be your XU password. May I recommend the password topspin to keep things simple.
9. When installed (takes a while…), navigate to your Desktop and open TopSpin.
10. Click Install License Ticket.
11. Paste your license code into the website.
12. Click Activate Licenses.
13. Click Bind to Computer.
14. Click Activate Selected Licenses Now.
15. Go back to TopSpin. Exit and close TopSpin. Reopen it.
16. Select Do Not Show This Message Again, and click Expinstall.
  1. Most default settings during this process will be fine.
  2. When prompted, the NMR Admin password is what you set in 8c.
  3. When prompted, only select High Resolution Systems.
  4. Along the way, you will be prompted with “installing” a 600 MHz instrument. This is fine, since the computer isn’t attached to a spectrometer.
  5. The status of expinstall can be followed with the console output in the bottom left of the window.
  6. When prompted, select Do Not Show This Message Again, and click Automatic Backup. The default location will be fine.
  7. Click Save, then click OK on popup windows, then click Close.
17. Map your data folder to Topspin:
  1. Right click in the Browser panel to the left side of the Topspin window.
  2. Click Add New Data Dir.
  3. Click the three dots.
  4. Browse to C:/Bruker/Topspin/data/YourInitials (create this folder if it doesn’t already exist).
  5. Type your initials in ALIAS and click OK.
18. TopSpin is now ready to use!
19. To open an emailed dataset:
  1. Open the Datamail .zip attachment in the NMR email.
  2. Copy the folder inside the .zip attachment (it should have the name of the NMR experiment you typed into the IconNMR software when you acquired the spectrum).
  3. Browse to C:/Bruker/Topspin/data/YourInitials.
  4. Paste the folder. Your data will be ready when you open TopSpin.
