Spring Prayers

A Metaphor for Change

Spring is a metaphor for change. Some changes we eagerly await, and some we abhor. Some changes we plan and others arrive uninvited. To all these changes we ask the gift of Your perspective beckoning us to expectation, hope, and rebirth.

May the sunlight and the rain be reminders that You are at work renewing the earth. As a God of renewal, You are ever at work in our lives, too.

Open our eyes and lives to the needed changes in our lives this Spring. Awaken us to new life and perspective, for we pray in Jesus’ name.

A Prayer for Spring: Daffodils

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills.
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a boy:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company;
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils

Spring Lady bug on a leaf with rain drops

Nothing is so beautiful as spring -
When weeds in wheels shoot long and lovely lush;
Thrushs' eggs look little low heavens, and thrush
Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring
The ear, it strikes like lightning to hear him sing;
The glassy peartree leaves and blooms, they brush
The descending blue; that blue is all in a rush
With richness; the racing lambs too have fair their fling.
What is all this juice and all this joy?
A strain of the earth's sweet being in the beginning
In Eden garden? Have, get, before it cloy,
Before it cloud, Christ, lord, and sour with sinning,
Innocent mind and Mayday in girl and boy, Most, O maid's child, thy choice and worthy the winning.

- Gerard Manley Hopkins S.J.

The Hope of Spring

God, thank you for Spring and the hope of warmer, longer, brighter days.
Thank you for the coming of growth and life and birth.
Thank you that things are coming awake in the world.
This is what our calendar says, and we do see some signs that it is real.
But we also still struggle with the residual layover of winter.
Now we ask that you bring into reality all that belongs in this season.Your word says that we will have provision, and hope, and joy, and health and loving relationships here and now in this life.
We ask that what belongs in this season would become actual in our practical lives.
We hope in you and in your promises. We hope in your gift of Spring.

A Sleeping World Emerges

A sleeping world emerges to new possibilities,
weakening winter's icy grip,
and birdsong and bleating lamb
announce to all the promise
that in due season
creation bursts into life.
And whilst leaves that fell in winter
lie upon the ground,
soon to feed the earth,
in nature's wondrous cycle
of death and rebirth,
within the tree is a stirring of new growth.

New Leaves Tree in a field with a blue sky

Creator God,
at the start
of this New Year,
when thoughts turn again
to beginnings,
starting afresh,
new leaves
and turning skeletons
free from cupboards,
be with us
as we gaze into the distance
of fresh mission grounds,
of hopes and dreams,
opportunities for service,
and uncertainties.
Take our fears
and turn them into strengths.
Take our lack of faith
and empower us,
through the Spirit
who breathes life into this world,
whose presence is reflected
in the icy chill
of winter's breath,
as well as the comforting warmth
of a summer breeze.
Walk with us into this New Year
of opportunity.

For Flowers That Bloom

For flowers that bloom about our feet;
For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet;
For song of bird, and hum of bee;
For all things fair we hear or see,
Father in heaven, we thank Thee!

For blue of stream and blue of sky;
For pleasant shade of branches high;
For fragrant air and cooling breeze;
For beauty of the blooming trees,
Father in heaven, we thank Thee!

A Prayer in Spring

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers today;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfill.

For Seasons on Life Colorful flowers

For seasons on life
When fall turns to winter
and winter to spring
let me embrace
the seasons of life.

From highs and lows
From joy to sorrow
and back again
From birth to breath
and life to death.

God, make yourself known.

A Blessing in Spring

Blessed be your name in the land that is plentiful,
Where your streams of abundance flow, blessed be your name.
Every blessing you pour out may we turn back to praise of you,
O God when the sun's shining down on us when the world's 'all as it should be'
Blessed be your name.
Blessed be the name of the Lord.
Blessed be your name.
You give and take away our hearts will choose to say Lord,
Blessed be your name.

Excitement of Spring Blue Jay on a branch covered in flowers

Dear Lord,

You have what it takes to make this spring my best ever.
You can make this spring Amazing, Astounding, and Astronomically Awesome.
You can bring bountiful blessings to me.
You can help me create a continually contagious caring and compassionate attitude in my heart.
You can design and deploy desirable dynamic dreams about my destiny that will capture my imagination and ignite my determination.
You can open seemingly endless streams of encouragement and edification to me.
And you can flow your living water into my heart and inspire me to be a freshly, faithfully - focused follower of Jesus Christ.
My prayer request to you, Lord, is - don't hold back!
Let all the wisdom, insights, healing mercies, financial provision, relationship blessings, and dynamic energy that you have ready to give me - start flowing to me without hindrance.
And Lord, I will seek to put myself in a position to cooperate with you, yield to you, and receive from you!
With excitement and love I pray,
