Xavier University's Theatre program combines practical experiences and professional collaborations with a rigorous and diverse curriculum. In addition to a strong foundation of theatre courses, the Theatre program offers students the opportunity to focus in education, performance or design and technology. The program prepares students for professional experience outside of Xavier by fostering a practical, cross-cultural and student oriented-curriculum.

More than 250 students participate annually in theatre activities at Xavier. Beyond departmental productions, students may participate in Xavier Players, a student-run theatre organization on campus that offers unique performance, design and directorial opportunities. Learn in the classroom from a dynamic faculty that includes full-time professors, along with local, regional and national theatre professionals.

Theatre, and certainly the arts in general, play a significant role in the vibrancy of the Cincinnati area. Within downtown Cincinnati alone, there are three major, professional theatre companies: Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park (two-time Tony award winner), Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. In total, there are more than 125 theatre and arts organizations that serve the southwest Ohio region. These organizations offer significant opportunities for students seeking to serve our region in the arts.

Department Mission

Xavier University's Theatre program will prepare students for professional experience outside of Xavier and will foster a practical, cross-cultural and student-oriented program that bridges the gap between the student, faculty member and different academic disciplines. By educating students in such a diverse, open, and free environment, they will establish themselves in their community by bringing an integrated understanding of humanity, the world, and God to their profession and lives.
