Academic Plan

Major

Students who major in Montessori education can be certified according to the American Montessori Society to teach children either two and a half to six years old or six to nine years old using the Montessori philosophy.

To major in Montessori education, Xavier University requires 64 hours of core curriculum, including natural sciences, English, mathematics, communications, a cultural diversity elective, theology, business, philosophy and fine arts.

Minor

An American Montessori-certified minor in Montessori education is also offered by the department. The minor is a 27-hour program available to all Xavier undergraduates and is compatible with any major. The program is designed to provide each student with academic and practicum experiences in the field of teaching young children.

Credential/Licensure

The Xavier University Montessori teacher education programs grant certification in the following areas:

  1. American Montessori Credential for pre-school or elementary.
  2. Ohio State Early Childhood Licensure for Pre-K to 5th Grade.

Graduates will be certified to teach in public or private Montessori schools. Graduates will also be certified to teach in public or private traditional schools from Pre-K to 5th Grade. The program is MACTE accredited and American Montessori affiliated.

Ohio Assessments for Educators Information

Students working towards an Ohio 4 year Resident Educator License must take and pass three tests:

  1. Ohio Assessment for Educators - Early Childhood Education - field 012
  2. Ohio Assessment for Educators - Assessment of Professional Knowledge Early Childhood (PK-3) - field 001
  3. Ohio Assessment for Educators - Foundations of Reading - field 090

Scores are sent to both Xavier University (#1965) and the State of Ohio (#7945).
