About The Coordinator

Ms. Kara Rettig-Pfingstag has been a professional academic advisor for the last thirteen years, first working at the University of Cincinnati and the College of Mount Saint Joseph before coming to Xavier University in November of 2001. Her past experiences range from every aspect of undergraduate admissions work, academic advising and various registrar duties, such as official transcript evaluation and building transfer equivalency tables.

In addition, Kara also holds a B.A. and a M.A. in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Cincinnati where she taught Freshman English and developed interests in medieval literature (especially twelfth century Provencal and French lyric), psychoanalytic literary theory, and in the life and work of Oscar Wilde.

Ms. Rettig-Pfingstag recently served the advising profession as the 2001-2002 President of the Ohio Academic Advising Association, the 2002-03 OHAAA Past President, and for many years as the OHAAA's Webmaster. She is also an active member in the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) and the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

Kara provides personal attention, support and guidance to Xavier pre-professional health students and is uniquely qualified to assist in the many aspects of their planning and preparation for a future career in professional health care. In her work as an academic advisor, Kara primarily practices a developmental advising approach. Developmental advising is an interactive process between the advisor and student, which helps the student set and achieve academic goals, acquire relevant information and services, and make responsible decisions consistent with interests, goals, abilities, and degree requirements.
