SPIN, the Sponsored Programs Information Network, is an extensive research funding opportunity database service offered by InfoEd Global. SPIN contains over 40,000 opportunities from more than 10,000 sponsors.  The SPIN database is accessible from any on-campus computer.

This Quick Start Guide aims to provide you with the basics of using SPIN.

Gaining Access

Running A Basic Search

SPIN provides a modern full-text search that is run against the entire record.  You may search for any component of an opportunity, for example:

  • Opportunity Title
  • Sponsor Name
  • Funding Opportunity Number 
  • Field/Subject Matter
  • Eligible Applicant Types

Results are returned in relevancy ranked format, and can be further sorted, grouped, or filtered by the results grid column headers.

Guided by the advanced parsing techniques below, enter search terms in the search box then click SearchYou will be searching the complete text of all SPIN program descriptions.

AND Scientific AND research Searches for records containing ‘scientific’ and ‘research’ or their inflectional forms
OR Scientific OR research Searches for records containing ‘scientific’ or ‘research’ or their inflectional forms
Exact Phrase “Scientific Research” Wrapping terms in double quotes searches for records containing the phrase ‘scientific research’
NOT Scientific –research Inserting a minus symbol before a term searches for records containing ‘scientific’ and not ‘research’
Wildcard Scient* Appending an asterisk to a term invokes a wildcard search: searches for records containing ‘scient’ and any suffix
  • When the list displays, click on any opportunity title to get detailed information.
  • You can sort the list by clicking on any header name.

Refining Your Results

Category Filters can be configured to describe yourself as an applicant in several areas.  Select the most relevant options that describe you, and the system will display only results that you are eligible to apply for.

Search Options can be set under the Options menu to configure some personal preferences, such as only viewing recently updated opportunities or excluding US Federal sponsored opportunities.  These options are included as additional parameters in your search.
