What does the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) do?

The center takes the lead in constantly ensuring that Xavier is a community that values inclusive excellence for the student body. We are committed to supporting students through their journey of developing multiple and intersecting identities, and learning how to work across any personal or societal differences. We also make sure that our underrepresented students get recruited, are retained by feeling valued and complete their college education. We advise identity and social justice based student organizations that focus on race, gender and sexuality. Finally, we educate the entire campus about the value of diversity in our lives by inviting speakers and other kinds of programming that seek to nourish a capacity in all members of our community for perspective taking, solidarity and justice.
El Centro es la principal organización que se esfuerza en constantemente asegurarse que Xavier sea una comunidad que valora lo academico, lo social, y la inclusión en excelencia de todos. Estamos comprometidos a apoyar estudiantes durante su viaje de desarrollo entre las múltiples identidades que se interceptan, y facilitar que aprenda a trabajar a traves de cualquier diferencia personal o social. Tambien nos aseguramos de que nuestros estudiantes subrepresentados sean reclutados y retenidos por sentirse valorados, y completan su educación universitaria. Tambien aconsejamos a organizaciones estudiantiles basadas en justicia social. Finalmente, educamos a toda la población sobre el valor de la diversidad comunitaria por invitar varios oradores y organizar diferentes tipos de actividades que nutren una capacidad en todos los miembros de la comunidad de Xavier para desarrollar la perspectiva, solidaridad, y justicia.

What informs our work?
Que es lo que informa nuestro trabajo?
Our work at Xavier is informed by three Audre Lorde quotes. The first is, "There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives." The second, "It's not our differences that divide us. Its our inability to recognize, accept and celebrate those differences." Finally, "Without community there is no liberation...but community must not mean shedding of our differences, nor the pathetic pretense that these differences do not exist."
La primera es "No hay tal cosa como una lucha de solo un tema por la razón que no vivimos una vida de un simple tema." La segunda es "No son nuestras diferencias que nos separan. Es nuestra incapacidad de reconocer, aceptar, y celebrar esas diferencias." Y el último es "Sin una comunidad no hay liberación... pero la comunidad no debe de deshacerse de nuestras diferencias, ni tomar la posición ridícula que estas diferencias no existen."
