Junior Faculty Series
This spring, the CTE will offer a series of three workshops to support the career development of junior faculty. While open to all faculty, these workshops will be particularly valuable for full-time faculty who are pre-tenure or pre-promotion. Faculty are welcome to attend as many workshops as they can. Registration appreciated.
All workshops will be held on Zoom. Zoom link will be shared in the CTE newsletter and by email with registrants.
Session 1: Addressing Course Evaluations
Thursday, February 9, 11:30-12:45
The course evaluation is a source of anxiety and can affect a faculty’s teaching attitude. Learning to embrace this feedback process as an opportunity to improve teaching skills and make meaningful adjustment to your courses may help lessen anxiety and stress. Carefully examining and translating students’ comments into the language of teaching/learning can give us insight into challenges commonly experienced by novice learners. We will discuss how to respond to negative comments in a positive way in order to better support student learning and intellectual development, as well as to enhance our teaching.
Session 2: Building Your Academic Portfolio
Wednesday, February 22, 12:00-1:15
An academic portfolio is a useful tool to document professional development in teaching, scholarship, and service. Keeping an organized record of your academic career experiences and achievements is important when it comes time to present credentials for promotion. It also helps you reflect on goals, performance, and progress. CTE would like to share some possible questions for reflection and useful tips on preparing an effective academic portfolio.
Session 3: Career Advancement Plan
Thursday, March 2, 11:30-12:45
Early career faculty members are expected to reach for and attain a certain level of professional growth as part of the requirements for promotion. These requirements encourage faculty members to develop to their full potential, become high achieving, high performing individuals, and to establish career goals that align with departmental and institutional plans. Early career faculty are invited to perform a self-assessment and create a personal roadmap to identify professional development needs in order to meet short and long term career objectives which are essential for successful career advancement.
