SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

CTE Stinson Lounge (CLC 317)—Pedagogy Sessions

Strategies in Questioning and Handling Student Responses, 1:00-1:50

Questioning students during class lessons serves as both a simple active learning tool to encourage critical thinking and a formative assessment method to collect evidence for teaching improvement.  However, when the instructor asks questions, students may respond, ask a question back, or give no answer. This workshop will discuss effective questioning techniques that enhance student learning and enable a higher level of learning according to Bloom’s taxonomy. We will also discuss ways to handle various types of student responses to guide their leaning. In addition, strategies will be presented that help create class environments with equal participation opportunities.

Retrofitting a Course to Improve Accessibility, 2:00-2:50

This workshop will discuss general principles and specific strategies instructors can use to make their existing courses more accessible. It focuses on adjustments that can be made at the last minute and/or after the semester has already begun. Topics will include attendance and late work policies, accessible course materials, and alternative assignments and assessments. Participants should come prepared to discuss 1-2 specific policies or assignments that they would be open to changing in their courses to improve accessibility.

Effective Praise to Encourage Students' Resilience and Learning, 3:00-3:50

Research has shown that praise is a great tool for building the relationship with students and to encourage their learning. Effective praise should reinforce noteworthy academic performance through effort, process, or behavior, rather than talent or ability. It is important to be intentional about the use of supportive language that emphasizes a growth mindset. In this workshop, participants will brainstorm and practice giving process/behavior-specific praise in various class situations. Tips on making effective praise a positive routine part of your teaching will be discussed.

CLC 308—Canvas and Learning Technologies

Learning Mastery Gradebook in Canvas, 1:00-1:50

This session will introduce you to the Learning Mastery Gradebook in Canvas. The Learning Mastery Gradebook is a feature option in Canvas, which helps you to track progress on student learning outcomes. In this session, you will learn how to set up the gradebook and explore how you might be able to utilize this Canvas feature in your course.

Using One Drive and Teams in Canvas, 2:00-2:50

Microsoft has added new integrations for One Drive and Teams in Canvas. The new features include creating assignments and collaborations using One Drive and setting up and accessing a Microsoft Team using Canvas. In this session, we will explore these new features and learn how you can use them.

Library Resources in Canvas and Online Courses, 3:00-3:50

This session will introduce a new and very different xu.tutor, how to find and use persistent links to streaming videos and journal articles, and a little bit about copyright of library materials.

CLC 309—Canvas and Learning Technologies

Using Classroom Technology, 1:00-1:50

Learn how to operate technology common to most classroom spaces, including connectivity, projection, and audio. Tips and basic troubleshooting strategies will be covered, as well as how to submit tickets for equipment requests and events.

Canvas Essentials and the Xavier Course Template, 2:00-2:50

This session will focus on utilizing the main functions of Canvas to run your courses efficiently this fall. You will also learn how to customize your Canvas courses with the Xavier template that has been applied to all of your courses.

Ally Training: New Accessibility Tool for Canvas, 3:00-4:00

During this training session, you will learn how to use Ally, Xavier's new accessibility tool for Canvas. Ally highlights accessibility issues in Canvas pages, assignments, and files and then helps you fix the issues. It also enables students to obtain some course content in alternative formats — e.g., ePub and MP3 files for offline reading and listening. This training session will have three parts: presentation, workshop, and Q&A. Be sure to sign up for the pilot so that you can fully participate in the workshop portion. This session can also be attended via Zoom.
