Spanish Major

Peru Program

Students enrolled in Spanish 202, 496, EDCH 320/520 and ECON 421 will participate in a 10 day study abroad opportunity offered during spring break. The ten day program includes homestays, service learning literacy projects, historical and archeological sites, and visits to sustainability projects in the Andes. At the service site, students will work with children ages 6-12 on story creation and dramatization, songs, folktales, and group book projects. Coursework during the semester supports the ten day experience by providing embedded curriculum, reflection and a research project. This year, prior to the program, students participated in a COIL module (collaborative online international learning) with students at the Universidad Antonio Ruiz de Montoya (UARM). During their time in Lima, Xavier students will meet their Peruvian counter parts. Two Peruvian students from UARM will travel with the Xavier group from Lima to Cusco, Andahuaylillas and the Sacred Valley.

This program is organized in collaboration with the Universidad Antonio Ruiz de Montoya (UARM). It includes service learning literacy projects in Lima and Andahuaylillas. Sustainable tourism in Cuyuni and Ccatca includes a walking tour of sustainability projects, and CCAIJO sponsored projects such as local sustainable housing and a women's weaving cooperative. The final portion of the program includes the travels in the Sacred Valley and the Incan archeological sites of Pisac, Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu.
