Biomedical Sciences Major
Biomedical sciences is Xavier University's preparation for students who wish to pursue a career in medicine, dentistry or other health sciences. The program emphasizes biology, chemistry and physics, the sciences required for admission into professional schools.
Xavier's biomedical sciences majors, upon graduation, are equipped with a scientific background necessary for subsequent studies in medicine, dentistry, or in similar professions, and have a solid foundation in the liberal arts. Committees on admission at professional schools leave no doubt that they regard an education in the liberal arts as one of the most important factors in forming an effective and capable professional in health care.
To major in biomedical sciences, 20 semester hours of biology, including zoology, physiology, embryology and genetics; 21 semester hours of chemistry, including general, organic and physical; and 8 semester hours of physics are required. An additional 10 semester hours in a science concentration must also be completed. To strengthen and broaden the background of all Xavier students, a liberal arts core curriculum consisting of courses in history, literature, foreign language, fine arts, mathematics, philosophy, social science and theology is also required.
Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences. Those students wishing to pursue administration employment in the health care field may wish to inquire about Xavier's graduate program in Health Services Administration (GPHSA) program.
Biomedical Sciences Minor
The minor in biomedical sciences is designed for undergraduate students who wish to complete science courses generally required of applicants to medical school while completing a bachelor's degree in a non-science major.
- Thirty-five hours of science courses are required for the minor, including BIOL 160, 161, 162, 163, CHEM 160, 161, 162, 162, 240, 241, 242, 243 and PHYS 160, 161, 162, 163.
- A 2.000 cumulative average must be attained in these courses.
