CAS Students Present on the Links Between College Hookup Culture and Sexual Violence

On Monday, November 12, Dr. Marcus Mescher (Theology Department) and three CAS students Daniel Bowling (Math, '19), Riley Head (PPP, '20), and Derek Adkins (PPP, '20) presented their findings from their 2018 CAS Summer Research project that examined the links between college hookup culture and sexual violence. This included research done by former Xavier theology professor Dr. Jennifer Beste, informed by XU student ethnographers. Speaking to a crowd of more than 100 students, they facilitated a conversation that covered issues ranging from harmful gender roles, alcohol abuse, viewing porn that normalizes violence against women, the instant gratification of social media, and moral relativism cloaked by the popular student credo "I do me, you do you." They also created space for students to reflect and discuss how XU party culture compares to what they want for their own sense of identity, intimacy, and relationships. It's a great example of Cura Personalis and student leadership.
