Class Year/Year of Graduation:  2013

Major/Graduate Program:  Major: Sport Management; Minors: Business and Comm Arts

Newly hired as (position, company): Marketing Intern at FOX Sports Ohio

Where did you hear about this professional opportunity, and what do you think contributed to being hired?  I came to hear of this opportunity through the Xavier eRecruiting website, and I knew right away that this was an opportunity that I could not pass up. After bombing a phone interview last semester, I turned my failure into a way to improve and succeed. I was a lot more prepared and confident this time, which definitely showed in the performance of my interview.

How did Xavier Career Services help you along the way to achieve this accomplishment?  With the relationships that Xavier's Career Development Office has with a wide variety of companies and organizations, I feel that there are a lot of opportunities available for students and alumni. It is almost inevitable for you to find a prospective opening that's right for you, whether it is an internship or a full time position. I have used several of their resources, including résumé critiques, mock interviews, and networking opportunities; every time I prepare for a job application or interview, I always reflect back on what I have learned from the Career Development Office to strengthen my professional skill set.

Based on your own experiences, what advice do you have for students as they gear up for their job/internship search? Remember that networking skills are one of greatest professional tools to have. Sometimes it's about who you know, and being able to work that to your advantage can be very beneficial. Reaching out to those who can provide guidance to your professional success should not be viewed as nerve wrecking or intimidating, but rather an exciting way to break into your industry of choice.
