Xavier University presents 2008 Founders' Day Award to Tom Sedler, Class of 1958

Home City Ice president was honored on Thursday, Sept. 25, for his contributions to Xavier | September 22, 2008

Xavier University presented this year’s Founders’ Day Award to Thomas E. Sedler, president and CEO of Home City Ice, at the 30th annual Founders’ Day dinner on Thursday, Sept. 25. The event honors individuals whose outstanding contributions to Xavier help the University better serve students and society.

A native Cincinnatian, Sedler graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1951 and immediately entered the family business, Home City Ice, a company started by his engineer father, Frank, in 1924. Sedler worked days while attending evening classes at Xavier. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1958.
Except for service in the Ohio Air National Guard from 1962-1963, Sedler has spent his entire career at Home City Ice. Since 1985, he has served as president and CEO. Home City manufactures 4,400 tons of ice daily in 28 manufacturing plants across the Midwest and includes 36 distribution centers that provide ice to 10 states.
Even as Sedler focused his energy on growing the business, he maintained commitments to Xavier and the community. At the University, he served on the Alumni Board and remains active on the President’s Advisory Council. He has generously given both time and expertise to the boards of the Friars Club and the Catholic Inner-City Schools Education Fund. In 2001, Xavier presented Sedler with its Distinguished Alumnus Award in recognition of his humanitarian and civic commitments. He is also a member of the Williams College of Business Alumni Hall of Fame.

A long time supporter of Musketeer sports teams, Sedler has contributed resources to serve a wide spectrum of University needs on academic fronts. Most recently, he and his wife, Genny, contributed $3 million to the Williams College of Business Center for Entrepreneurship and $2 million to the Basketball Excellence Fund through the All For One Club to support student-athletes.

The Sedlers have four sons, all of whom attended Xavier and are continuing their father’s legacy at Home City Ice.

The event took place in the James & Caroline Duff Banquet Center at the Cintas Center.
