Xavier University Selects Associate Dean for College of Social Sciences, Health, and Education

Xavier University has named Dennis D. Long, PhD, associate dean of the College of Social Sciences, Health, and Education, effective July 1, 2012.


A native of Mt. Blanchard, OH, Long has been at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte since 2006, as chair and professor in the department of social work. For two years, he served as interim associate dean of the College of Health and Human Services.


He has a history of over 25 years with Xavier University.  He began as an instructor at Edgecliff College in 1979 and continued when that institution was bought by Xavier. He was assistant professor at Xavier from 1982-1987, associate professor 1988-1996, and professor from 1997-2006. He also was chair of the department of social work from 1991-2006. In 2003, he served as chair of Xavier’s Faculty Committee & Assembly.


“I have a personal and professional commitment to Catholic and Jesuit ideals,” Long says. “I feel called to use my talents and background to join the College of Social Sciences, Health, and Education team to advance educational efforts and address community and regional needs.  I am very proud to be returning to Xavier University and honored to be selected to serve in this leadership role.”


Long has had vast administrative experiences at UNC-Charlotte with research awards and grants, development, department and college fiscal oversight, faculty development and recruitment, advising, and undergraduate and graduate enrollment and assessment.


“Dr. Long brings a unique combination to this vital position for our college,” says Mark Meyers, Dean of Xavier’s College of Social Sciences, Health, and Education. “He is a scholar and an experienced administrator who shares our passion for the service of the community as a whole and to each of our students. We are excited to have Dr. Long rejoin us at Xavier - the best description would be ‘welcome home’. 


Long earned a PhD in Sociology with a concentration in social psychology at the University of Cincinnati.  His MSW with a clinical concentration is from The Ohio State University and his BA is in psychology and sociology from Ohio Northern University. He is co-author of four books on social work and numerous articles in top academic journals. His administrative strengths involve a genuine dedication to empowerment, collaboration, fostering positive interpersonal relationships, strategic planning, and curriculum advancement. 


The motto of The College of Social Sciences, Health, and Education is “Collaborate. Innovate. Educate.” It includes sixteen undergraduate majors and eighteen graduate degrees including PsyD, Xavier’s only doctorate.
