Xavier University Center for Mission and Identity Tipsheet

A blessing of the Center for Mission & Identity’s Ruth and Robert Conway Library was offered during the meeting of the Jesuit Identity Committee of the Board of Trustees on Feb. 17 by Fr. Bill Verbryke, SJ (Superior of the Xavier Jesuit Community and member of the Committee). Members of the Conway Foundation, including Robert Conway, Sr, the staff of the Center, and alumna/artist Holly Schapker were present.

Xavier’s Student Government Association held a workshop to reflect on the University’s mission and Jesuit identity as members of SGA. The program was facilitated by SGA’s Jesuit Identity Representative Sadie Olsen, SGA President Ryan Alleman, and the director of the Center for Mission and Identity, Joe Shadle. One participant said, “I had no idea how awesome our Jesuit heritage is until now. It really made me look more in-depth as to how exactly Xavier has impacted me and how I have impacted Xavier.”

Robert McDonald, MD ’55 has continued his support of the Educating for Justice Program which he helped initiate in 2009.

The annual Heartland Delta Faculty Conference was attended by Drs. David Burns, Rebecca Luce, Kathleen Smythe, Thomas Wagner, George Gordon, Elaine Crable and Ravi Chinta. Held this year at Loyola University Chicago, the theme was sustainability, Jesuit, Catholic and Green. Smythe (center) offered a presentation, Education for Homecoming.

On March 13, the Center will hold a Conversation Hour on the current issue of Conversation on Jesuit Higher Education: Work/Life Balance which includes an article by President Michael Graham SJ “The importance of good coffee.”
