Topping Out Hoff Academic Quad

| July 1, 2009

You may have noticed a flag and a pine tree atop the new Williams College of Business (WCB). The two were placed there Tuesday, June 30 as part of the topping out of the Hoff Academic Quad.

A steel beam with dozens of signatures was hoisted into place with the tree and flag by members of the Messer and Xavier construction teams.  According to Messer Construction Manager Todd Sadler, about 130 people were on hand for the topping out ceremony.

Topping out occurs when the last steel beam or structural element is put into place on a building and signifies that the construction has reached the sky without loss or injury. It is also meant to bestow good luck for the future inhabitants of the building. To view a video of the topping out please click on the link below.

All three buildings now under construction, the WCB, the Conaton Learning Commons and the new central utility plant, are on schedule. They are scheduled to open in August 2010.
