Dr. Calvin Mackie Speaker at One of Xavier"s Numerous Week of Welcome Events

Xavier’s Office of Multicultural Affairs presents its annual Welcome Reception with Dr. Calvin Mackie as the featured speaker on Wednesday, August 26 from 5 – 7 pm in the Gallagher Student Center Theatre. This event seeks to empower and encourage students as they embark on a new academic year as well as discuss the benefits of leveraging diversity in their success. Mackie is an author, engineer, motivational speaker, professor and entrepreneur. His message transcends race, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, ability and time. He was in Spike Lee’s documentary “When the Levees Broke” providing insight on the effects of Hurricane Katrina and was recently a guest on CNN’s Black in America 2.

After starting college in remedial reading because of weak SAT scores, Mackie earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech and a B.S. in Mathematics from Morehouse College, and a MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech. He joined the Tulane University faculty, researching energy efficiency and renewable energy and in 2002, became an Associate Professor with tenure. Mackie’s eleven year academic career ended when Tulane University disbanded its engineering school following Hurricane Katrina. In 1992 he co-founded Channel ZerO, an educational and motivational consulting company and has presented to numerous civic, educational institutions and Fortune 500 corporations.

Mackie won the 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, the 2003 National Title One Distinguished Graduate for Louisiana, 2002 Black Engineer of the Year Award for College Level Educator, 2002 New Orleans Data News Weekly Trailblazer Award, and the Pi Tau Sigma/ASME Excellence in Teaching Award in Mechanical Engineering for 2000 and 2002. He holds a patent on a device to retrofit luggage stow bins on Boeing airliners.
