Xavier University’s Department of Art announces the opening of the 2009 Art at the X National All-Media Juried Exhibition from Oct. 2-Nov. 7 in the Xavier Art Gallery on campus. The artists' reception and awards ceremony was held on Friday, Oct. 2. The gallery is located in the Cohen Building behind the Cintas Center.
The theme this year is Celebrating Women in recognition and in honor of the accomplishments of 40 years of women at Xavier. Women were first admitted as full-time day students in the fall of 1969.
Entries were juried by Jessica Flores, associate curator of contemporary art at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Flores reviewed 358 works submitted by 128 artists from 31 states and Canada. She selected 56 pieces for the exhibition, which includes sculpture, installations, photography, drawing, prints, landscape and figure painting. Flores believes it demonstrates a range of voices, materials and approaches and hopes it will allow audiences to consider and move beyond preconceptions about gender.
“As a juror, it is always interesting to see new work and encounter artists with whom I otherwise might not be familiar,” Flores said. “This year’s theme, Celebrating Women, offers an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of Xavier women over the past 40 years. As the works were juried from slides, without artists’ names, the gender of the artist was not a considered criterion.”
The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. A panel discussion moderated by Jennifer Wies, PhD, director of the Women’s Center at Xavier, takes place on Oct. 21 from 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. On its final day Nov. 7, the gallery will be open for Reunion Weekend from noon-2:00 p.m. All events are being held in the gallery and are free and open to the public.
