Among 10 people inducted into the Ohio Soccer Hall of Fame on Sunday, Sept. 13, were former Xavier soccer coach Giovanni Capurro and Xavier alumnus Paul Healy.
The event took place on Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
Capurro coached the Xavier men’s soccer team from 1976-1985, moving the team from an intramural sport into a Division I program. He was a player for team Italia (the Cincinnati Bruins) in the 1960s and was one of the founders of the Soccer Association for Youth program, known as SAY Soccer. He conducted numerous clinics for coaches and players to heighten awareness of the game in this area.
Healy, of Eaton, Ohio, graduated from Xavier in 1951 and became one of the true pioneers of youth soccer in the Miami Valley area. He organized and coached youth teams and Saturday games. Healy was instrumental in convincing high schools to make soccer a varsity sport. In addition to coaching, he became a certified game official and was one of the first high school referees in this region.
