300 Attending Heartland Delta VI Conference at Xavier

| May 26, 2010

"We are not monks!...The world is our house." The Heartland Delta conference being held May 25-28, 2010 at Xavier University engages this phrase from Jerónimo Nadal, S.J., an early Jesuit leader, in the context of modern Jesuit higher education in the United States.

The Heartland-Delta Conference provides an essential venue for dialogue and learning about Jesuit education, collaboration and Ignatian spirituality. Faculty, staff and administrators from the twelve Heartland-Delta colleges and universities will explore important topics and build fruitful, lasting connections with colleagues at the event.

Particularly aware of the opportunities and challenges posed to Jesuit campuses by globalization, conference attendees will gather to:

• Remember together the Jesuit values which underlie their work
• Reflect on ‘the signs of the times’ in light of global issues
• Explore their responses to these issues in light of their shared Jesuit mission
• Inspire each another to acts of justice and compassion
• Find support for their common work across campuses and disciplines

Three keynote addresses will stimulate thinking and conversation among participants:

John L. Allen, Jr., senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter and author of "The Future Church: How Ten Trends are Revolutionizing the Catholic Church," will examine future trends sure to affect Jesuit campuses and the world of tomorrow's students.

Kathleen Erickson, R.S.M., co-founder and former director of the Women's Intercultural Center in Anthony, NM, will share stories of those on the margins of society and their call to those who live amid the comforts and securities of higher education.

Larry Gillick, S.J., director of the Deglman Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Creighton University, will invite participants to reflect on the world within and the world beyond the walls of the university, and Ignatius' invitation to those in Jesuit higher education today.

The Heartland-Delta network connects the twelve Jesuit colleges and universities within the Midwest and southern regions of the United States in a shared exploration and engagement of the mission of Jesuit higher education. The conference is sponsored by the Heartland-Delta schools and the five Jesuit Provinces in these regions.
