Muskies Sweep Norse

Xavier starts season 2-0 | October 3, 2011

The Muskies got their season off on the right foot this past weekend with a sweep of the NKU Norse. XU went on the road Friday night and dominated in front of a hostile crowd. Freshman goal tender Tim Pietrnac not only won in his debut but earned a shutout behind excellent team defense and several big saves. Sophomore Brian Gardner added a hat trick which helped to empty the stands early and allowed the Muskies to avenge an OT loss from last year.

Saturday was the home opener with a few more exciting highlights. Fellow freshman goalie Max Poe made his debut and earned his first collegiate victory. Sophomore Brett Deacy had a breakout game of his own, scoring a hat trick in the first period. Deacy used his size and growing confidence to help carry his team to a 2 – 0 start. The Muskies did have to fight through some fatigue and conditioning issues which they will need to overcome quickly in order to remain competitive.

Coach Driscoll seems cautiously optimistic with the start. “Coach Sperrick, Coach Homelle and weren’t sure exactly what we had with this team given the number of newcomers and of course the freshman goaltenders. We have worked hard on defense and that should be our strength all year but I have to admit it was exciting to see the offense find a groove. I think we have a lot of talent, it is just a matter of brining the new guys along and ensuring the seniors demonstrate leadership. Our focus the next couple of weeks will be conditioning; this is critical and working out some of the other parts of game plans we did not execute on. That said, we are pleased with the start.”

X goes on the road to IU on October 21st and 22nd to take on a very tough Hoosiers squad.
