Xavier Boxing Begins the Year 2-0

| November 10, 2010

Friday night, Xavier Boxing went into hostile territory with two fighters who had yet to score a victory in their college career. In the past, this situation had ended up being a losing effort for Xavier boxer's Aaron Isett (1-2) and Iso Tidjani (1-2), but Friday both fighters were able to break the cycle and notch their first collegiate victories.

On a match card filled with University of Kentucky fraternity fights, Isett and Tidjani were part of the only intercollegiate bouts on the card, both up against University of Kentucky boxers. First up would be Isett, taking UK newcomer Hunter Montwell (0-1) at the 132 weight class. During the first two rounds of the match, Isett was showered with heckling from the UK faithful. Yet, Isett, who had dropped from his weight class last year of 142 lbs, managed to overpower the significantly taller Montwell all three rounds, scoring two decisive standing eight counts in the third and final round of the bout. After three rounds of action, the judges would decide in favor Xavier, improving Isett's record to 1-2.

Two bouts later, Iso Tidjani would enter the ring, just as Isett did, with a 0-2 record facing a UK newcomer, Josh Mills (0-1).Throughout the week leading up to the fight, Xavier coaches preached the idea of outboxing an opponent to Tidjani, as in past fights he has come out of his element and brawled with opponents. Tidjani carried out the gameplan to perfection, landing jab after jab on Mills and moving around ring well enough that Mills rarely had a chance to even land a punch. However, after two close rounds on the scorecards coach Gino Dania encouraged Tidjani to come out firing in the third, and leave no doubt as to who won the fight. Tidjani responded to Dania's motivation and left the corner for the third round determined to put the fight away. From the ring of the bell for the third round, Tidjani threw punches and did not relent until the final bell came. After convincingly winning the final round, Tidjani was given a decision victory by the judges, wrapping up a perfect start to the season for the Xavier Boxing Club.
