Xavier welcomes children to campus on Tuesday, Dec. 8, for its annual Christmas event

The student-run celebration is bringing 180 schoolchildren to campus as special guests | December 4, 2009

Elementary school students from area elementary schools came to campus for the annual event, A Xavier Christmas, on Tuesday, Dec. 8, where they enjoyed carols, a live animal Nativity scene and a tree-lighting ceremony.

Around 180 children from Hoffman-Parham, Frederick Douglass, Sharpsburg, Williams, South Avondale and Norwood View schools were the special guests this year. They were accompanied by more than 180 Xavier students, their 'buddies,' and had an opportunity to meet Santa Claus and do crafts and activities.

Xavier University President Michael J. Graham, S.J, joined the participants at the Sally Watson Tree for a special tree-lighting ceremony. The Xavier University Gospel Choir performed.

Xavier faculty, students and staff collected new hats and gloves to be distributed to the children in attendance and sent to other children in need. All the children received fleece scarves color-coordinated by school.

The evening ended when the children departed at 6:30 p.m.
