Hundreds of Xavier students camp out at the Cintas Center for Crosstown Shootout tickets

The students are pitching their tents for two nights and must attend the women's Crosstown Shootout | December 1, 2009

Xavier students are pitching tents in the cold this Friday, Dec. 4, on the grounds outside the Cintas Center in order to be first in line for a coveted ticket to the Crosstown Shootout.

More than 1,100 students vied for 775 tent spots. Pitching a tent gives students a spot in a line to possibly get one ticket for the men’s basketball Crosstown Shootout to be held Sunday, Dec. 13, between the Xavier Musketeers and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. The forecast calls for frigid temperatures during the weekend.

Students may set up tents beginning at 11:00 p.m. on Friday after the 7:30 p.m. men's game versus Kent State University. Any student who wants a ticket to the men’s Crosstown Shootout game must also attend the women's Crosstown Shootout game on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2:00 p.m. Campers will pack up their tents and clean up the area outside of the Cintas Center that morning before returning for the women’s game. They can get their tickets to the men's game after the buzzer sounds to end the women's game.

Chartwells, Xavier’s dining service, plans to provide some food giveaways for the campers, and the Student Activities Council is providing hot chocolate one night. Tim Conroy, president of Xavier’s X-treme Fans and vice president of the Student Government Association, is coordinating the tradition this year.

“I would be surprised if we don't see (men’s basketball) Coach (Chris) Mack at some point during the weekend,” he said.
