Club football kicks off second season

Club expands season to seven games and joins a new conference | August 23, 2007

Xavier's club football team is already on the practice field getting ready for its second season. The season kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 8, against Marquette University in Milwaukee at 4:00 p.m. The team's first home game takes place Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Xavier High School when Xavier takes on Wilmington College.

This season the club has expanded its schedule from three to seven games and joined the newly formed Midwestern Club Football Conference. The conference includes Xavier, Miami (Ohio), Marquette, and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. The Musketeers will also battle junior varsity teams from Wilmington College, the College of Mt. Saint Joseph and Thomas More College in non-conference games.

“We have about 30 players returning from last year’s team and are expecting 10-15 newcomers,” says head coach Tom Powers. “All the players and coaches are very excited about the upcoming season and are working extremely hard to bring Xavier its first football victory in 34 years.”

The season will feature several special home games. For example, Sept. 23 is Southwest Ohio High School Football Appreciation Day where any high school football player from the SW District of Ohio, who wears his jersey to the game gets in for free. The Oct. 20 game is being held during Xavier’s Family Weekend.

The team is also recognizing Xavier football alumni on Oct. 29. All former University football players, coaches, managers and cheerleaders in attendance are being honored at halftime.

Nov. 15 marks the Greater Catholic League/Catholic Youth Organization Appreciation Night. Any football player and cheerleader from these leagues who wears his or her jersey/uniform to the game are admitted at no charge. They can also take part in the pre-game festivities.
