New dean named for College of Social Sciences, Health and Education

Mark Meyers replaces Neil Heighberger who recently retired | July 17, 2007

The University has named Mark Meyers the new dean of the College of Social Sciences, Health and Education. The college was previously known as the College of Social Sciences. Meyers replaces Neil Heighberger who recently retired. Meyers begins his new duties Aug. 1.

Before coming to Xavier, Meyers was the associate dean at Rowan University’s College of Education in Glassboro, N.J., a position he held since 2002. Meyers joined Rowan in 1996 as an associate professor in the department of secondary education and served two years as the chair of the secondary education and foundations department.

Meyers’ teaching background includes undergraduate and graduate social studies methodology courses, graduate curriculum and foundations courses, and the supervision of master’s theses in social studies education. He received his B.A., M.A. and, Ph.D. from the University of Florida. His research interests include the role of technology in preservice education and the impact of field-based pedagogy, and technology integration into the social studies classroom.

He is also the co-author of several education textbooks, including Teaching: An Introduction to the Profession.
