Dance team finishes eighth at Chick-Fil-A Cheer and Dance Collegiate Championship in Florida

Tryouts for next year's team take place Wednesday, April 26, Friday, April 28, at O'Connor Sports Center | April 24, 2006

The Xavier dance team finished eighth at the Chick-Fil-A Cheer and Dance Collegiate Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., April 5-9. This is the second consecutive year the squad has competed in the competition. The squad was 15th after the preliminary rounds and wound up finishing eighth in the challenge cup. Towson University won the nationals for the fifth straight year.

The dance team competed in Division I against more than a dozen other teams. Their money-themed routine incorporated hip-hop, jazz and pom dance moves. The squad’s music, costumes and props also had a money theme.

“I wish the placing turned out differently, especially for my two seniors on the team,” says Coach Steve Chapla, 30. “But overall I was very proud of the girls.”

Tryouts for next year’s dance team are being held Wednesday, April 26, and Friday, April 28, at the O’Connor Sports Center. During the school year the squad practices four hours a week. Team members are also required to do an additional hour of cardio conditioning each week. Contact Chapla at 513 266-7989 for more information.

During the school year, the team performed during half-time at several men’s and women’s basketball games. They also performed around the Cincinnati area including a few performances at local high schools.
