David West named preseason All-American

Men's basketball team wins final exhibition game as national recognition continues | November 13, 2002

The men's basketball team won its final exhibition game of the season last night, beating the One World All-Stars, 80-72 at the Cintas Center. The All-Stars included former Xavier player Darnell Williams, who scored 19 points. Senior forward David West led the Musketeers with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Also last night, West was named Associated Press First Team All-American, the highest rating ever received by a Xavier player. West received the most votes of any player. On Monday, the team equaled its highest preseason national ranking ever, earning a No. 10 spot in the Associated Press poll. The ranking tied that of the 1997-1998 season. The team finished that season 22-8, winning the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament before losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Washington. It ranked as high as No 7 that year, before finishing the season ranked No. 23. The team starts its regular season on Monday, Nov. 18 against St. Peter's in a preseason National Invitation Tournament game at the Cintas Center.
