Department of music stages bloodthirsty Sweeney Todd

Demon barber of Fleet Street slicing way through London's upper crust, Nov. 4-6 | October 24, 2005

The department of music is staging Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Nov. 4-6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gallagher Student Center theater.

When it premiered in 1979, Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The legendary barber, hell-bent on revenge, takes up with his enterprising neighbor to slice their way through London’s upper crust. Justice is served along with lush melodies, audacious humor and bloody thrills.

Assistant professor of music and choral music director Tom Merrill sings the lead role of Sweeney Todd. But Merrill is not the only Xavier faculty or staff member in the cast. Xavier alumnus Phil Clary plays the role of the Italian barber, Pirelli, and Scot Buzza from campus ministry plays the role of Toby. Other leads in the cast are played by students. Most notably, Margaret Russo plays the role of Mrs. Lovett.

Xavier University adjunct Stephen Skiles is directing the production. Clay Pendergass is the musical director. Admission is $5 for students and $15 for all others. Tickets can be purchased by calling the theater box office at 513 745-3939.
