Xavier, Notre Dame headline Wooden Tradition

Musketeers to take on regional rival Purdue in second game of doubleheader | June 1, 2005

Xavier University has been picked to play in the sixth-annual Wooden Tradition doubleheader basketball tournament scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 26, in Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Notre Dame plays North Carolina State in the opening game while Xavier takes on regional rival Purdue in the second match-up. Purdue coach Matt Painter and Xavier coach Sean Miller are both first-time head coaches in the Wooden Tradition, after serving in previous Wooden Traditions as assistant coaches for their current teams.

This is Xavier's second appearance in three seasons and Notre Dame’s first appearance since 2000 when it beat Cincinnati in the first game in the doubleheader’s history. Purdue returns for the fifth time in six years, while NC State’s appearance is its first.

Ticket are available online and range from $10-$125. They include both games of the doubleheader.

Established in 2000, the John R. Wooden Tradition is an annual tribute to the legendary former coach that benefits the Special Olympics Indiana. Similar to the standards established by the Wooden Classic, its California-based sibling founded in 1994, the event hosts college basketball’s premier programs.

The 2005 John R. Wooden Tradition Golf Tournament is being held on Sept. 26 at Prairie View Golf Club, and the John R. Wooden coaches dinner is being held on Nov. 25 at The Westin Indianapolis.
