Xavier joins UC, NKU in memorial silence for tsunami victims

College campuses briefly come to a halt on one month anniversary to remember those affected by natural disaster | January 24, 2005

From classrooms to cafeterias to chapels, the campuses of Xavier University, the University of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University went silent for one minute at exactly 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26. That moment of silence marked one month since a devastating tsunami wreaked havoc on a dozen nations circling the Indian Ocean.

Xavier marked the moment of silence with 12 chimes from the clock tower at the Gallagher Student Center. The number of chimes symbolized the 12 countries affected by the disaster: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Maldives Myanmar, Seychelles, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Thailand.

On the campuses of the University of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University the moment of silence was observed simultaneously.

The campus communities of all three universities are coordinating efforts to raise relief funds for tsunami victims in Asia and Africa. Each campus is raising funds through Feb 9.
