Students begin weekend running Near Naked Mile

Warmer indoor weekend activities include a retreat, a talent competition and a concert | January 17, 2003

Xavier students are warming up this snowy weekend by running across campus for charity in, well, nearly nothing. The Near Naked Mile, in which minimal attire is warn, takes place Friday, Jan. 17, at 7:00 p.m. Students can register for $5 starting at 6:00 p.m. The race is being sponsored by STYUKA, a campus fund-raising group, and proceeds benefit the Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless and Happen Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides art opportunities for parents and children. For more information, call 513 745-4887. For the more indoor-inclined, the Xavier Idol contest continues at 9:00 p.m. in the Gallagher Student Center on Friday. The audience is voting on which contestants will compete in the final round for a trip to New York. Based on the show American Idol, Xavier’s version began last semester and provided the winter break for finalists to fine tune their acts. For more information, e-mail or call 513 841-0203. Upperclass students are embarking on the Approach retreat Friday as well. They are staying at the Milford Spiritual Center until Sunday, Jan. 19. This weekend program challenges students to view their lives from a new perspective and gain insight into their relationship with God and others. For more information, contact Greg Carpinello at 513 745-3567. On Sunday, Jan. 19, pianist Jeffrey Biegel performs on as part of the University’s classical piano, guitar and jazz series. Biegel brings his electrifying technique, elegant pianism, warmth and artistic maturity to the Gallagher Student Center stage at 2:30 p.m. An international performer, he premiered in 1992 in Carnegie Hall and has since been featured on various television musical performances, as well as in concert halls with some of the world’s leading orchestras. He’s performing Bach, Beethoven and Liszt for his Xavier performance. Tickets cost $19 and $17. There is a $3 senior citizen discount and students with ID are free. For more information, e-mail or call 513 745-3161. For a complete list of events, check out the University’s calendar page.
