Two-hour show on Martin Luther King Jr. weaves together music and commentary | January 17, 2003

In commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr., WVXU music director Lee Hay produced a two-hour audio collage of music and commentaries about the famed civil rights leader that is being broadcast on public radio stations across the country. The program, "We Were Here," weaves together the music and words of African-American musicians, poets and activists with excerpts from a number of King speeches and essays. Poet and playwright Nikki Giovanni, Black Panther Bobby Seale and singers Mahalia Jackson and Billie Holiday are featured in the program. The music of Sweet Honey in the Rock and John Coltrane can also be heard. " ‘We Were Here’ brings to the listeners an aural experience that is personal and intense with a constant flow of words and music," says Hay. The program is being broadcast on other public radio stations nationwide through Public Radio International. It airs on Monday, Jan. 20 at 8:00 p.m. For more information, contact Hay at 513 458-3143 or e-mail her at lhay@xstarnet.com.
