Xavier basketball teams have busy weekend

Men lose to top-ranked Alabama, Tara Boothe earns honors as women roll over Columbia | January 6, 2003

The Xavier basketball teams had a busy weekend, with the No. 19-ranked men's team taking on the No. 1-ranked University of Alabama, while the women's team hosted Columbia University. All-American David West scored 16 points in the first half and Romain Sato, who became the 40th person in University history to join the 1,000-point club, added 17 of his team-high 20 points in the second half to lead the Musketeers. Their combined effort wasn't enough to overcome the top-ranked Crimson Tide, however, as Xavier fell 65-58. The Musketeers trailed by just three points with 37 seconds left, but West was whistled for a foul away from the ball and Sato's three-point shot attempt to tie the game didn't count. Alabama, which is now 10-1 on the season, hit its next basket and two free throws to put the game out of reach. The men's team ends its non-conference schedule at 9-3, beginning Atlantic 10 Conference competition against Richmond on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Cintas Center. The women's team also ended its non-conference schedule over the weekend by beating Columbia, 61-38. The Musketeers' defense forced Columbia into 28 turnovers and held the team to just 29 percent shooting from the field for the game. Freshman Tara Boothe led Xavier with 15 points. She was also named the Atlantic 10 freshman of the week for the third time in the last four weeks on Sunday. The women's team is now 8-3 on the season and travels to the University of Dayton on Tuesday night to take on the Flyers. It returns to the Cintas Center on Friday night against Duquesne and Sunday against La Salle.
