Renaissance of Culture day in the student center also headlines campus events | February 23, 2004

Spring might not quite be in the air on campus just yet, but it's definitely on the minds of seniors as they begin their countdown to commencement. With less than three months remaining in the spring semester, career workshops and seminars are already in full bloom.

The most significant of this week's career events comes Thursday, Feb. 26, when Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell and Procter & Gamble's external relations manager Damon Jones present a "Maximizing Your Leadership Potential" seminar from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. in the Gallagher Student Center theater. The seminar, sponsored by the black student association's leadership committee, offers participants insight on the speakers'-both of them Xavier alumni-pathways to success. For more information, call Shaun Ladd at 513 924-8166.

On Tuesday, Feb. 24, the center for career and leadership development (CCLD) is hosting a resume workshop from 5:30 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. in the Gallagher Student Center, Room 330. The workshop provides students with fundamental tips and guidelines in resume writing. For more information, call 513 745-3141 or e-mail csc@xu.edu.

The CCLD's events continue Thursday, Feb. 26, with a professional experience program (PEP) talk from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. in the CCLD office in the Gallagher Student Center, Room 310. Through the program, the CCLD refers resumes of qualified students to employers to assist them in pursuing part-time, internship and summer employment opportunities. For more information, call 513 745-3141 or e-mail csc@xu.edu.

The career preparation of the week culminates Thursday evening, with a job fair preparation workshop hosted by CCLD from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. in the Gallagher Student Center, Room 214. The workshop helps students prepare to attend the upcoming "Diversity Across Career Employment Fair" on Friday, March 12, and other job fairs. For more information, call 513 745-3141 or e-mail csc@xu.edu.

But the week's events on campus extend beyond the CCLD. On Tuesday, the association of Xavier women is hosting a listening session to discuss the possible development of a women's center on campus. The session starts at noon in the Gallagher Student Center, Room 250. Additional sessions regarding the same topic are being held Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 4:00 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. For more information, contact Susan Namei at 513 745-3042 or e-mail namei@xu.edu.

Tuesday afternoon, the black student association sponsors "A Renaissance of Culture" celebration from 1:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. in the Gallagher Student Center. The daylong event begins with a "wrap session" with Cincinnati area authors, and also includes a book fair and an art exhibit. At 8:00 p.m., Step Africa!, a collaborative of youth artists from the United States and South Africa, is performing in the student center's theater. Their performance highlights the African-American art form of stepping and its link to South African dance. An open mic session and coffee hour immediately follow the performance. All events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the black student association at 513 745-3190.
