Men's basketball team wins A-10 opener

Sato scores 22 in win over Rhode Island, while women lose to Duquesne despite 31-point effort from Tara Boothe | January 12, 2004

The men’s basketball team began its 2004 Atlantic 10 Conference season with an impressive 81-67 win over the University of Rhode Island on Sunday, Jan. 11 in Kingston, R.I.

Senior guard Romain Sato led the Musketeers with 22 points to go with five rebounds and three assists, while Lionel Chalmers finished with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Two other Musketeers just missed recording double-doubles in scoring-rebounding. Anthony Myles had 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals, while freshman forward Justin Doellman had 12 points to go with a trio of career highs: nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

It was the team’s fourth straight victory this season and 16th straight A-10 regular season win. Last year the team lost its conference opener before winning the next 15 straight to finish with a 15-1 record. The Musketeers are now 1-0 in the conference and 9-4 overall. They travel to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net Ohio.

The women’s team was in Pittsburgh this weekend playing Duquesne, although the outcome wasn’t very pleasing. The women’s team lost, 83-69, despite the efforts of sophomore Tara Boothe, who tied her career high with 31 points and grabbed seven rebunds. Boothe also scored her 750th career point during the game. Through just 45 career games, Boothe has 775 points.

Kristy Wallner added 12 points for Xavier, and Suntana Granderson added eight points. Before the game, Granderson was named Atlantic 10 rookie of the week. Granderson is the first Musketeer to win rookie of the week honors since Boothe won a record 11 times last season.

The honor for Granderson came after a pair of 20-point effort this past week. On Monday, Granderson set career highs in an overtime game against Richmond with 24 points, eight rebounds, three steals and 42 minutes. Granderson hit six three pointers in the game, including one with 1.2 seconds showing on the clock to send the game in overtime. She then hit the go-ahead three in Xavier’s 63-61 win over St. Bonaventure on Friday. In that game, she scored 22 points and had seven rebounds in the game.

The Musketeers are now 9-6 overall on the season and just 1-3 in the A-10. The team returns home to play Saint Joseph’s University on Friday, Jan. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
