Men's basketball defeats Miami of Ohio

Team, now 4-2, gears up for game at Mississippi State this Saturday | December 10, 2003

The men's basketball Musketeers rode their defense on the way to a 55-36 win at local rival Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on Tuesday night. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the team, which found its offense in the second half to break open a close game. Xavier's record for the season is now 4-2.

After falling behind 7-2 at the start, Xavier eventually took the lead in a defensive battle 19-17 at halftime. Miami took the lead back early in the second half, pulling ahead with what proved to be its last lead at 24-22 with 14:17 left in the game.

The Musketeers answered with an impressive 20-2 run to not only take the lead but take control of the game for good, putting a decisive 42-26 on the scoreboard with less than seven minutes left.

Senior guard Romain Sato, who finished with team highs of 14 points and seven rebounds, scored seven straight points at one point during the decisive run. Senior guard Lionel Chalmers added 12 points, while sophomore guard Dedrick Finn added 10 points.

Chet Mason led Miami, 2-3, with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The 36 points by Miami marked the lowest point total by a Xavier opponent since the advent of the shot clock in the 1985-1986 season. It was also the lowest point total by a Xavier opponent since Oklahoma City beat the University 30-28 in the 1981-1982 season at Schmidt Fieldhouse.

The Musketeers play their next game at undefeated Mississippi State, 6-0, on Saturday, Dec. 13. The 7:00 p.m. (Central Standard Time) tipoff is being broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
