Men’s basketball team takes on Purdue tonight

Facing Boilermakers prologue to Crosstown Shootout this weekend | December 3, 2002

It's Crosstown Shootout week. But before the men’s basketball team takes on rival University of Cincinnati, it first faces Purdue University tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Cintas Center. The game is being televised by Fox Sports Net Ohio and broadcast on WLW (700AM). The Purdue Boilermakers understand rivalry, their own being with Indiana University. A Cincinnati Enquirer article talks about how both rivalries have their great moments, but the Indiana-Purdue games are well-known throughout the nation due to the antics of former Hoosiers coach Bob Knight. In games where Xavier and Purdue have gone up against each other, Purdue leads 9-1, including six straight wins against Xavier. Last year’s game at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind., Xavier lost 70-66 despite a career-high 31-point game from David West. This year Xavier looks to come back and win against the Boilermakers. The numbers are behind them for a victory. Xavier, which made the Associated Press “Top 25” in each of last year’s final two polls (22nd in the final poll), has also figured prominently in the first three polls this season. The Associated Press has ranked Xavier 16th in its latest men’s basketball poll following a ranking of 11th the previous week and 10th in the preseason poll. Xavier is 15th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll following a ranking of 11th the week before. Xavier was also 11th in the preseason Coaches’ Poll.
