Students plan to pack into shuttles for Labor Day fireworks

A variety of activities and fall sports season openers also mark the first weekend of the semester | August 29, 2003

After the first week of fall semester classes, Labor Day weekend brings a variety of activities to campus, as students enjoy the three-day break and the University's fall sports teams open their seasons.

The holiday weekend festivities peak Sunday, Aug. 31, when shuttles transport students to and from the annual WEBN fireworks display on the Ohio River in front of downtown Cincinnati. Sponsored by the student activities council, the shuttles depart regularly from Buenger Circle from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. for any students wanting to attend. The shuttles then bring students back to campus after the finale of the massive end-of-summer blast. For more information on the shuttles, contact Joanie Weidner at 513 745-4250.

The weekend’s activities actually begin on Friday, Aug. 29, when the University's athletic teams begin their fall season. The volleyball team leads the way, opening its season Friday at 4:00 p.m. at the Hampton Inn/Jacksonville University Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. The team's first game is versus the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. The tournament continues on Saturday, Aug. 30, when the team plays at 1:00 p.m. versus Jacksonville University and a 6:00 p.m. game versus Birmingham Southern. Live stats of all volleyball games this year are being broadcast on the athletic department's web site.

The women’s soccer team also begins its season Friday, playing at 5:00 p.m at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Friday night also brings a performance by hypnotist Paul Parsons in the Gallagher Student Center Theater at 9:00 p.m. There is no cost to attend. For more information contact Jim Miller at 513 745-4889.

On Saturday, Aug. 30, from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., the student activities council is sponsoring a “pignic” on the campus green, or in the armory in the event of rain). Montgomery Inn ribs are being served for dinner at 6:30 p.m., and music and games are being provided. All students are welcome to attend. Also, Saturday, at 9:30 p.m, Bacchus is sponsoring a movie night in Kelley Auditorium. "Shrek" is the feature attraction. Food is also being provided and door prizes are being raffled. For more information, contact Lorri Howell at 513 745-3125.

On Sunday, Aug. 31, the men’s soccer team opens its season at 1:00 p.m. versus Michigan State University at the MSU/Radisson Classic in East Lansing, Mich. The team’s run at the tournament continues on Monday, Sept. 1, with another game against the University of Michigan at 3:30 p.m.

The women’s soccer team also plays its second game of the season Monday at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Cincinnati.
