Biking 4 Life

2003 graduate embarks on cross-country bike tour | June 13, 2003

On Tuesday, May 20, Xavier graduate Ben Krause, along with Loyola University graduate Jeff Guhin, began a 70-day cross-country bike pilgrimage to spread the "Gospel of Life" as well as raise money for Catholic Charities USA and the National Catholic Student Coalition. Their journey, Biking 4 Life, began in San Francisco and concludes in New York City on Tuesday, July 29. The pair will stop in more than 50 cities along the way to raise funds and evangelize to parishes, youth groups and anyone open to dialogue. "Pope John Paul II has made a pressing appeal in the name of God for all of us to respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life," said Krause. "The distance we travel and the hardships we will bear will be symbols of how far we all must go and how much we all must struggle to bring about the Kingdom of God here on Earth." Krause, a resident of Omaha, Neb., received numerous honors while at Xavier for both his academic and leadership work. He co-founded the "Men 4 Others" community living house and was active in various faith and justice organizations through which he led retreats, organized service projects and served on the Justice Across Campus Committee. Krause was also one of the five service fellow scholars of the Class of 2003. As a service fellow, Krause divided his time volunteering throughout the Cincinnati area and in several Latin American countries. Guhin, also a resident of Omaha, graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans, La. He has been active in community service for the past eight years and has earned numerous recognitions for his work. An avid cyclist, he has participated in numerous distance cycling tours. He served as the external affairs chairperson for a coalition of students at Jesuit colleges and universities working for justice, is a national student organizer for The Moratorium Campaign and works as a student assistant at his university’s Jesuit Center. Guhin and Krause are both graduates of Creighton Prep in Omaha. Biking 4 Life is sponsored by the National Catholic Student Coalition, which strives to embody the Catholic identity for students from campus ministries at universities in the United States.
