Xavier athletics in the news

David West, Rose Ann Fleming among those profiled | October 31, 2002

The University's athletic department is finding itself in the news quite a bit of late. CNN and Sports Illustrated featured Xavier in its Atlantic 10 preview, picking David West as player of the year for the third straight season and giving the team top billing for its frontcourt and backcourt. Also, the Cincinnati Post recently profiled Sister Rose Ann Fleming, the University's academic advisor for athletics and the person primarily responsible for the men's basketball team going 61 for 61 when it comes to players earning their degrees. Men's basketball coach Thad Matta is catching the eye of the media as he enters his second year. After a stellar start to his career at Xavier, Matta's sudden rise to stardom and what he might expect next was the subject of a column byCincinnati Post columnist Lonnie Wheeler. Women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff is finding himself in the local spotlight as well, being the focus of stories in the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Cincinnati Post. David West is the focus of five questions in the Cincinnati Enquirer, including one where he explains his new tattoo. Other stories in the media focus on Keith Jackson, Will Caudle, David Young and several new players.
