Jewel A. Smith has a Ph.D. in musicology with a minor in piano performance from the University of Cincinnati, CCM. She is an adjunct professor of piano and musicology at Xavier University. She is also a professional pianist. Dr. Smith has presented papers and lecture recitals at meetings of the American Musicological Society, The Society for American Music, Bethlehem Conference on Moravian Music, and International Alliance for Women. Her book Music, Women, and Pianos in Antebellum Bethlehem, Pennsylvania: The Moravian Young Ladies’ Seminary was published by Lehigh University Press in 2008. She received an NEH Fellowship in 2007 and an AAUW Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in 2008 to support her monograph Breaking New Ground: Women’s Academic and Music Education in the Northeastern United States from the 1790s to the 1860s, to be published by the University of Illinois Press.
