Community Action Days – September 2018

The month of September is Community Action Month in honor of Community Action Day (CAD).  CAD is a program that was started 10 years ago by the Dorothy Day Center for Faith & Justice. It is the University’s largest service experience that Xavier students, faculty, staff, and alumni – regardless of where they are on their service journey – are invited to learn from, grow with, and serve the communities that exist beyond the confines of our university. With a focus on meaningful service accompanied by reflection, CAD seeks to spark compassion for and connection with oneself, the Xavier community past and present, local service agencies, and the neighborhoods and members of your community.

As alumni, family and friends, we continue that tradition with organized efforts across the US through various Alumni Chapters and Communities.  We hope that you will consider joining the Xavier community in making an impact.

Below are a list of service experiences being planned in the month of September.

** Check back frequently for additional locations.  Don’t see your area listed and want to organize something in your community?  Contact Becky Jackson, Director of Alumni Engagement at jacksonr1@xavier.edu **

Nashville, TN

You may recall Community Action Day (CAD) or the Crosstown Help Out (prior to 2008) when the Xavier community gathered for an exciting day of service. While this is a campus initiative, alumni chapters are using this event as an opportunity to serve in our own communities. For our CAD, we will be partnering with Hands On Nashville Day on Saturday, September 22 from 9am-noon.

Hands On Nashville Day, now in its 27th year, mobilizes 1,500+ volunteers to complete done-in-a-day improvement projects for Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS). Projects include: painting, landscaping, tree and daffodil planting, school garden maintenance, and inspirational color-by-number murals.

To ensure that everyone is able to register at the same school, please sign up below by September 16. I will then register us at a school that has space for our whole team. Be on the lookout for an email on 9/17 with more information about the location.

Snacks will be provided. It's helpful if you bring tools for planting flowers and/or trees.
If you have a X shirt from last year, please wear it - if not, we will have a shirt for you!
After the event, consider joining us for lunch at a nearby restaurant!
