For one parent, start of school brings tears of joy, sorrow
For Marney Rich Keenan, a columnist for the Detroit News, dropping her daughter off at Xavier proved to be unlike anything she had ever experienced. The Move Crew got her moved into her room in a joyful and impressive two minutes. But that only sped up the heartbreaking moment of The Great Parting.

Xavier continues to be ranked among nation's best
Each year national publications rank Xavier among the nation’s best universities, and the trend continues this year with three magazines in August naming the University as one of the best: Forbes, as one of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News, which ranks Xavier No. 3 in the Midwest and among the top 10 for the 16th straight year, and—new to the list—Washington Monthly, which ranks Xavier 12th among the top 50 master’s universities.
Xavier VP of Finance named CFO of the Year
After utilizing her skills to earn Xavier its first-ever credit rating and finding a way to finance the $78 million Hoff Academic Quad, Xavier’s vice president for financial administration Maribeth Amyot was named chief financial officer of the year by the Cincinnati Business Courier.
Activist Will Allen addressing urban farming revolution
Will Allen, one of Time magazine’s World's Most Influential People, is speaking on “Growing Power and the Urban Farming Revolution” at Xavier on Sunday, Sept. 26, as part of the University’s ethics/religion and society lecture series. Allen is co-founder of Growing Power, an organization that focuses on urban agriculture, low-cost farming techniques and bringing fresh, healthy food to low-income areas.
New rent-a-textbook saves students $117,000
The Xavier bookstore began a new program this year in which it offered to rent selected textbooks to students. For the Fall semester, the bookstore rented 4,080 textbooks—more than 20 percent of its textbook business—that resulted in $117,000 in savings compared to new book prices.
Williams offers new concentration in health industries
With the line between business and health care disappearing, the Williams College of Business is keeping pace with the changes by creating a new focus within its Master of Business Administration program on the studies of health care and related industries.
XLC offers new business management certificate program
The Xavier Leadership Center, the professional education arm of the University, is launching a business management certificate program on Monday, Oct. 4. The program, which meets for 26 weeks, offers participants the chance to update their MBA skills or learn the fundamentals of all business areas.
Alumni chapters taking steps to raise money for causes
The idea of serving others instilled in them during their time at Xavier didn’t get lost on some alumni. The Dayton chapter of the National Alumni Association is taking part in the Friends of the Poor Walk on Saturday, Sept. 25, while the Washington, D.C., chapter is participating in the 2010 Alzheimer’s Association National Memory Walk on Saturday, Oct. 2.
