For the 14th year in a row, U.S. News & World Report ranks Xavier University among the top 10 master’s-level colleges and universities in the Midwest. The 2009 edition of America’s Best Colleges ranks Xavier No. 2 among 141 Midwest colleges and universities. This is the third year in a row Xavier has received the No. 2 ranking. Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, took the top spot. Like Xavier, Creighton is one of 28 Jesuit universities in the country.

The Xavier men's basketball team squares off against some of the nation's most prominent collegiate programs in the 2008-2009 season. The schedule includes 19 teams that participated in 2008 post-season play, including as many as six teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament—Memphis, Duke, Southern Cal, Butler, Saint Joseph's and Temple.

National political forum Oct. 20
Xavier is hosting a special presidential election panel with four nationally known political experts discussing the status and historic nature of this year’s campaign. The event takes place on Monday, Oct. 20, in the Cintas Center and is open to the public. Panelists include Donna Brazile (D), chair of the Democratic National Committee’s Voting Rights Institute; Mike Murphy (R), senior strategist for Sen. John McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign; Joe Trippi (D), who pioneered the use of online technology in grassroots presidential politics as Howard Dean's campaign manager in 2004; and former Congressman John Kasich (R), an investment banker on Wall Street who hosts "Heartland with John Kasich" on the Fox News Channel.

The Princeton Review once again recognized Xavier as one of the best institutions for undergraduate education in the United States. The New York-based education services company features the University in the new 2009 edition of its annual book, Best 368 Colleges. In addition, Forbes.com recently ranked Xavier No. 225 among America's Best Colleges for 2008.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore, apostolic nuncio and permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, comes to campus Oct. 26 as part of the Ethics/Religion and Society lecture series. Migliore and Jame Schaefer, associate professor of theology at Marquette University, present "The Lord God Took the Man and Put Him in the Garden of Eden to Till It and Keep It (Gen 2:15)" at 7:00 p.m. in the James and Caroline Duff Banquet Center at the Cintas Center. The event is co-sponsored with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and Xavier's Department of Theology.
