Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning announced
The announcement of the new James and Delrose Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning was one of the highlights as Xavier celebrated Academic Day 2008 on Tuesday, Oct. 21. The University is developing community engagement as an integral part of its mission and the Eigel Center coordinates the many ways that Xavier students and faculty are working in and with local and regional communities.
Basketball teams highly ranked
The University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are again among the best in the nation, according to The Sporting News. The magazine’s preseason rankings place the men’s team at No. 19 among the top 40 college teams. The women’s team ranks No. 22. Atlantic 10 Conference expectations are high as well: A-10 coaches chose both squads as the early favorites to win championships in their respective divisions.
Ford named founding director of political institute
The University named Michael F. Ford founding director for the recently created Institute for Politics and Public Life. Ford, a 1970 graduate, has spent 37-years in politics, government and business at all levels of American public life, and held senior staff and senior advisory positions in nine presidential campaigns. The institute’s mission is to produce informed, engaged citizens and to research crucial matters of public policy and governance, and disseminate those findings to the public.
Panel: Election 2008
A panel of nationally known political strategists and experienced campaign managers shared their views on this year’s presidential race during A Closer Look at Election 2008 on Monday, Oct. 20. Sponsored by Xavier’s Institute for Politics and Public Life, the event featured Donna Brazile, Michael Murphy, Joe Trippi and John Kasich, all of whom have firsthand experience at the highest level of campaign politics. The panel touched on such topics as negative campaign ads, the “Bradley effect” and the role of the Internet in this election.
Faculty member receives Fulbright award
Rachel Chrastil, assistant professor in the Department of History, received a Fulbright-Alsace Regional Council Award for research in France for the spring 2009 semester. Chrastil is working in Strasbourg to develop a book manuscript dealing with that city and European civilization during the Franco-Prussian War. She is affiliated with the faculty of arts at the Université Marc Bloch. In recent years, an average of one historian per year has been selected for the Fulbright Award for research in France.
