Xavier women play first two NCAA games at home
Musketeer fans have the opportunity to watch the No. 5 women's basketball team possibly play its way into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women's Tournament this year at home. The Cintas Center is one of the host sites for the first two rounds of this year's Tournament, and as a result the women's team gets to play its first two games on campus. First-round games are on Sunday, March 21, at noon and 2:30 p.m. The second-round game is Tuesday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for all three games are $27 for adults and $17 for those age 17 and under. A family four pack is also offered for four single session tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for $51. Tickets are available online at www.goxavier.com or by calling the athletic ticket office at 513-745-3411, ext. 7.
More than 500 see P&G chairman speak at Xavier
More than 500 people packed the James and Caroline Duff Banquet Center to see Procter & Gamble CEO Bob McDonald speak on character, success, leadership and diversity. The talk was the latest in the Williams College of Business' Distinguished Speaker Series, whose next speaker is 1989 alumna Karen Wells. Wells, who is vice president of strategy and menu for McDonald's, is speaking on"Inclusion and diversity in business: a journey of lessons learned"on Thursday, March 25 at 8:00 a.m.
Fox Sports Ohio shines spotlight on Sr. Rose Ann Fleming
Sister Rose Ann Fleming, the 77-year-old lifeblood of the Xavier athletic department who makes sure all of the student-athletes are performing up to academic standards, was the focus of a feature on the Fox Sports Ohio web site."She basically runs the program,"sophomore guard Terrell Holloway said.
Reunion Weekend 2010 set for Nov. 5-7
While the events and details are still being hammered out, the National Alumni Association has set a date for this year's Reunion Weekend: Nov. 5-7. All alumni are invited back to campus to join the celebration, with a special focus on the Edgecliff and Xavier classes of 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005. Relive last year's Reunion Weekend.
Wendell Berry headlines "informal conversation"
Wendell Berry, the farmer/writer who was described by the New York Review of Books as"perhaps the greatest moral essayist of our day,"headlines a Town Hall Meeting on Sunday, April 11, at 7:00 p.m. in the Cintas Center arena. He's joined by fellow farmers/writers Wes Jackson and Gene Logsdon for what they're calling"an informal conversation."Complimentary tickets with assigned seats are being distributed at the doors, which open at 6:00 p.m. No tickets are being distributed in advance.
One-time child soldier speaks on war, rehabilitation
Boni, a one-time child soldier in Uganda who was originally chronicled in the documentary"Invisible Children,"is speaking of his experiences of war and rehabilitation on Tuesday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the James and Caroline Duff Banquet Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Former Xavier football coach Irv Etler dies
Irv Etler, who was Xavier's head football coach in 1973 when the University decided to eliminate the program, died on Feb. 16 at the Alois Alzheimers Center in suburban Cincinnati. He was 74 years old. After Xavier, Etler went on to form the Etler-Kettenacker Insurance Agency in Cincinnati.
A-10 names 72 Xavier student-athletes to its honor roll
Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade named 72 Xavier student athletes to the conference's academic honor roll for the Fall 2009 semester. Each of the student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or better.
