DeFoor performs at Obama inauguration
John DeFoor, director for Jazz Studies at Xavier University, is directing the National Jazz Band during the Jan. 20 inauguration ceremonies for President-Elect Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. During the Clinton inaugurations, DeFoor directed an all-star band of college and university students from around the Washington area. This time, he expects to do something similar, which could include directing five trumpets, four trombones and five saxophones plus piano, guitar, bass and drums. Tents are set up along the Mall with various performances in each. DeFoor gets to choose the music and plans to include some of his own compositions.

The next session of the 12-day program begins in February at Xavier’s Deerfield campus, 4770 Duke Drive, Mason, Ohio. Read the entire story for more information.
Xavier/Hebrew Union form historic partnership
Xavier University and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion are creating a Jewish and Interfaith Studies Program to be offered to students at both institutions. This is the first partnership of its kind between a Jesuit, Catholic university and a reform Jewish rabbinic seminary. The partnership is consistent with and furthers the missions of both institutions, and gives Xavier the largest and most comprehensive undergraduate Jewish Studies program in any Catholic institution of higher learning in the world.
TEACH grants
Xavier is one of 24 Ohio schools offering Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) grants for 2008-2009. The TEACH grant program provides federal grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who pledge to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school serving students from low-income families. The grants are also being offered at seven schools in Indiana and nine in Kentucky.
