Wanted: Move Crew volunteers
You
no doubt remember your own move-in day at Xavier and the importance of
being greeted by helpful, friendly members of the Xavier community.
Well, here's your chance to pay it forward. The University invites
alumni to be part of this year's Manresa move crew on Thursday, Aug.
20, and Friday, Aug. 21. There's a special need for volunteers to help
unload student belongings and direct traffic. For more information,
contact Leah Busam Klenowski at busamla@xavier.edu or register by Aug. 12 online.

Legacy lunch
The National Alumni Association invites all legacy freshmen—those with
a relative who graduated from Xavier or Edgecliff—to bring their families
to a special move-in day lunch and refreshment session on Friday, Aug.
21, from 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. The event takes place in the Alumni
Center at 1507 Dana Avenue—just look for the big balloon. Please

Nursing receives $1.5 million grant
The School of Nursing received a grant of almost $1.5 million—the
largest federal award in Xavier history—from the Health Resources and
Services Administration. The
grant funds a three-year distance-learning project that uses
high-definition video conferencing to provide master's-level education
and continuing-education credits to nurses working in rural areas. |

Russo 2009 Opera Idol
Soprano Margaret Russo, Class of 2006, is the winner of the Cincinnati
Opera's first Opera Idol competition. The opera announced the selection
from the stage of Music Hall on Wed., July 22, just prior to a
performance of Georges Bizet's Carmen.
Russo then surprised the sold-out crowd by performing the aria "Quando
me'n vo" (also known as "Musetta's Waltz") from Giacomo Puccini's La Bohme, accompanied by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under conductor Henri Venanzi. Watch a video of her performance.

Phillips brings home the gold
Women's basketball star Ta'Shia Phillips and the 2009 USA Women's World
University Games Team brought home the gold medal after defeating
Russia 83-64 at the World University Games Final on Saturday, July 18,
in Belgrade, Serbia. Team USA finished the tournament with a 7-0
record. Phillips averaged 4.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game during
the competition. |
